Tomball Economic Development Corp. to launch summer youth employment program

The Tomball Economic Development Corp. is launching a summer youth employment program that will reimburse Tomball companies for hiring up to two summer interns over a seven-week period, according to the Feb. 5 Tomball City Council agenda packet.

During its Feb. 5 meeting, Tomball City Council approved the program as a TEDC project. The TEDC has a budget of $40,000 for the program and expects to have 20 students, TEDC Assistant Director Tiffani Wooten said at the Feb. 5 meeting.

In a nutshell

The summer youth employment program will give Tomball companies an opportunity to be eligible for up to $4,000 of grant funds to hire up to two summer interns over a seven-week period, Wooten said during the Feb. 5 meeting.

“Ultimately, this program will help create a talent pipeline between our businesses and our future workforce,” Wooten said.

According to the Feb. 5 agenda packet:

  • The program will be available to young adults between 16-20 years old who attend high school or college within Tomball’s city limits or the Tomball ISD jurisdiction.

  • The application window for the program will open between March 18-April 19.

  • Companies will schedule in-person interviews between April 29-May 24.

  • Candidates will be paid $15 an hour and be limited to 20 hours per week not to exceed 140 hours during the seven-week program.

  • Businesses will choose when the seven-week program starts and ends between June 1-Aug. 15.

What they’re saying

  • “What a great program,” council member John Ford said during the Feb. 5 meeting. “Even if students interview and don’t get the position, interviewing is half that process, and just getting that experience, it will be really good.”

  • “The point of this program is to prepare our youth and get them ready for employment,” Wooten said.
