TOMBALL, TEXAS (May 7, 2025) – Baker Hughes hosted 30 eighth-grade students from Tomball Junior High School on May 1st for an interactive learning session that culminated with a graduation from the semester-long science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum. An ongoing collaboration between Baker Hughes and Tomball Independent School District (Tomball ISD), the STEM program provides students with the opportunity to develop a real-world understanding of STEM disciplines. The outreach is part of an effort by the company and its Asian Pacific American Forum (APAF) employee resource group to coach the next generation of STEM leaders.

“This program is about collaboration and opportunity. It would not be successful without collaboration from Tomball ISD, the Tomball EDC and dedicated Baker Hughes volunteers,” said Raj Sen, co-lead for Baker Hughes’ AFAF community outreach efforts. “This is a special program, and we are very proud of all the students who have completed it this year.”

“Thank you to Baker Hughes for their time, generosity and investment. Students need to see a connection between what they are learning and how it is being implemented,” expressed Selorm Dzaka, Tomball Junior High School STEM Teacher. “This program has made all the difference for our students.”

The visit to Baker Hughes’ Houston area facility showcased the cutting-edge technology utilized by the company. A tour of the facility guided students on a journey to see research & development laboratories, demonstrations from engineers, modern robotics and 3D printing. Students had the opportunity to test their hand with a hydraulic design activity resulting in prizes for winning teams and top participants.

Baker Hughes professionals Misha Lalloo, Maria Djuanda, Itza Beltran and Matthew Lee led a panel offering insight into STEM occupations. Topics including pursuing STEM career paths, daily roles and responsibilities and overcoming challenges provided a unique perspective for students. The panel showcased worldwide opportunities Baker Hughes offers STEM professionals, as Djuanda and Beltran appeared virtually from Alaska and Brazil, respectively.

The Tomball Economic Development Corporation (TEDC) worked to bring the two powerhouse entities together to further workforce development efforts. The continuation of the program for nearly five years has brought tremendous value to Tomball and its partners.

“The collaboration between Baker Hughes and Tomball ISD highlights how partnerships can produce excellent outcomes. This program offers unique, hands-on experiences that enhance what students learn in the classroom. The opportunity to engage with the best and brightest STEM professionals is a great resource as students prepare for high school,” offered Tiffani Wooten, TEDC Assistant Director.
